Ladies Trophy 2011
Monday, May 16th, 2011Sunday 15 May 2011 saw this year’s Pat Clark Ladies Trophy on the menu. A planned prompt start at midday was delayed when members’ access to the club was hindered by several hundred runners passing-by as part of the Yorkshire 10k Fun Run from Newby Hall – still it was in aid of a good cause, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, so we were more than happy to wait our turn. The morning had seen a lot of rain fall but it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the competitors from both the 10k run and from the ladies about to prepare for the afternoon’s racing.
The day’s three races were held in quite brisk winds which made for some lively sailing, helping to keep our sailors warm on what turned out to be a chilly day. In the first race Jane Jewitt and Alison Sturdy in their Heron put their sound tactical plan into effect – a simple one at that – get into the lead at the start and stay there! As this plan worked so well the first time round, Jane and Alison used it in the second and third race as well with great success to give them first place overall.
Di Wetherell and Emma Stamper in a Mirror tried hard to match the Heron for speed but without success. However these ladies were good enough to take second place overall. Special mention must go to Veronica and Richard Valentine who took third place overall in a Gull. Not only has it been a couple of years since Veronica last helmed a dinghy, the outstanding fact to me is that the combined age of the helm and crew in this boat must be at least 150 years; a wonderful achievement.
Well done to all the ladies that competed and congratulations to Jane and Alison.
